Overanalysis of iPhone total cost vs initial price etc.

There’s been a lot of ink, digital and physical, used up discussing the various ways that you can analyse how much the iPhone is going to cost you. I think that at some level we’re all barking up the wrong tree. There are a few things that we have to take into account about the current state of the marketplace: The phone companies are trying to soak you for as much as they can get. [Read More]

iPhone GPS project ideas

OK - I don’t have the time or the technical chops to develop mapping based tools, but here’s a few application ideas that could be interesting. I’m sure there are other folks with these ideas, and there’s nothing truly specific about the iPhone as a platform, other than it’s upcoming ubiquity and relative ease of development and deployment. GetTogether There’s been a number of applications that leverage some kind of social networking conduit to simplify getting together with people, but I can think of one other really simple location based tool that would be very handy. Red Herring: It's all Apple's fault

The Red Herring is certainly living up to its name. I wish that I’d been allowed to turn in “reports” like this one while in junior high. 17 paragraphs and 251 words of unsubstantiated data. Not even a link to the source report that the article is based on. Apple’s iPod is partly to blame for the collapse of the music industry, according to a report Friday from researcher eMarketer. Vista vs iPhone

Some interesting statistics. I was having a conversation with a colleague about the lack of Vista uptake in our office and at many of our clients. I just did a presentation on Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and one of the questions that we asked was about Vista deployment projects which can be simplified by using a VDI solution. The response out of 12 companies was zero. In our discussions we decided to go take a peek at the browser OS statistics from our various web sites. [Read More]

New iPhone and Telco FUD from the Register and ElectricPig

Found this article on the Register quoting an article on the Telco 2.0 site. The Telco article is pretty well written, but the Register folks have misread a ton of stuff including: “we learn that networks who partner with Apple must install Apple gear at the data centre to support its services - specifically, the Push Notification service that wakes up the Jesus Phone.” Which is mentioned nowhere in the original article and simply isn’t true in any case. Exchange and MobileMe together?

One thing that hasn’t been discussed with the upcoming iPhone software update and the new sync services of MobileMe is how the two sync services will cohabit. Generally speaking, sync services are complicated and potentially fragile. The more potential sources and destinations, the more complicated the situation. The current .mac sync services are good, but far from perfect as evidenced by the 150 entries that show up in the logs after : [Read More]

Did Apple upgrade the iPhone enough?

There have been a few articles recently asking whether or not Apple upgraded the iPhone “enough” with the release of the 3G iPhone. It’s a valid question, but when I review everything that’s happened in the past year, I’d have to say yes for now. We need to compare what get with the new model that we didn’t have in the original and it’s true that the list is relatively short: [Read More]

Hotmail deprecates WebDAV as Apple licences ActiveSync - more Microsoft silliness

This was an interesting bit of news that travelled across my screen today. Microsoft has decided to drop support for the WebDAV protocol on its HotMail property. Now this is an interesting (and entertaining) bit of news on several fronts. But first, the actual announcement bears some analysis. Q: Why are we disabling DAV? A: DAV is a legacy protocol that is not well suited for client access to large inboxes. [Read More]

The iPhone is still missing...

An FM radio! Isn’t it funny that at the original launch and for any iPod device the punditry used to lambaste Apple regularly for not including an FM radio? All we’re getting on the subject is radio silence and what a pleasant sound it is. Maybe they finally figured out that in the digital age, an FM radio is no longer an attraction. And interesting as the current digital radio offerings seem to be, they’re not international in scope and the iPhone is definitely an international product. [Read More]

WWDC - under the radar: Snow Leopard Server

Following up my Snow Leopard client article, here’s a rundown of the changes expected in the upcoming server release. We’ve seen that Apple has already pushed the desktop environment to it’s logical conclusion given the current state of the art. Macs are starting to enter the enterprise in larger and larger numbers and it’s the logical moment to start trying to taking some ground in the entrenched server market currently dominated by Microsoft and Linux.
