An interesting update that wasn’t important enough to make the Keynote presentation. The Airport Express got an update to share the same form factor as the Apple TV. It also comes with a number of nice under the hood specification bumps, notably the multiband radio.
I’m thinking this makes a perfect combination for business conference rooms. Configure the Airport Express to publish on all available radio bands an unlocked network. Then plug in an Apple TV on a pigtail Ethernet connection, and plug this into your overhead projector.
Bingo. Instant conference room broadcasting from your iPad or 10.8 when it hits the streets with the integrated AirPlay feature. No more screwing around with VGA cables and adapters, passing the cables around when changing presenters. No complicated security integration issues since it’s a private Wifi network.
The only missing piece is HDMI connected projectors to replace the aging collection of VGA only projectors.
I’m also thinking that this setup makes for a nice mobile package for presenters that travel frequently. Two tiny little boxes that fit easily in your luggage. The only requirement is an HDMI input at the venue.
